GOL SELECTS SITA’S NEW ELECTRONIC FLIGHT BAG SOLUTION FOR ENTIRE FLEET
GOL Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes, the largest low-cost and low-fare airline in Latin America, has selected global air transport IT provider SITA, and its technology partner Flightman, to provide applications and services for the electronic flight bags (EFBs) on board its entire fleet of 130 Boeing 737-NG aircraft.
This five-year contract, announced today at the Latin American aviation summit FIDAE, includes the provision of SITA e-Aircraft Application Services. This is a ground-breaking solution that uses SITA’s new EFB integration module to minimize the challenge of integrating EFB technology with airline IT systems. SITA’s service runs on GOL’s selected Class II EFB hardware which delivers the most benefits for retrofits. Located in the cockpit, it integrates communication avionics with hardware and software to enable the exchange of real time information between the aircraft and the airline’s ground operations.
EFBs are a welcome addition on aircraft as they reduce paper-based processes and the related operational costs. They support safe operations by reducing human errors, improve service to customers by minimizing disruptions while significantly reducing the workload for flight crew and ground staff. EFB hardware alone is of limited use but the real value comes from providing the EFBs with seamless connectivity to the airline’s central systems and adapting the applications to the airline’s various business processes.
SITA e-Aircraft Application Services eliminates the connectivity challenge by ensuring secure data delivery across multiple channels – airport cellular, airport WiFi or satellite – as used by each airline. If required by the airline, it can also leverage use of SITA’s existing ACARS infrastructure, which is used by more than 12,000 aircraft around the world and provides proactive monitoring and performance management. SITA’s service can also be quickly configured to adapt to each airline’s existing business processes and future operational needs.
For GOL, SITA’s EFB service will streamline all the processes around the aircraft, seamlessly connecting and integrating the aircraft with the airline’s existing IT infrastructure. It will enable GOL’s pilots to retrieve flight-plans or maintenance documents more easily and quicker than ever before.
Captain Adalberto Bogsan, VP, GOL said: “This EFB solution from SITA and Flightman is the most comprehensive on the market. Our team at GOL especially likes the workflow management capabilities of the Flightman software application because it allows the flight crew to take fewer steps to find the information they need which minimizes their workload in-flight. Having SITA’s e-Aircraft integration is vital and will ensure that we have a robust system that integrates fully throughout the airline and our various IT systems, allowing us to enhance productivity, reduce waste and have a platform in place for future growth.”
Philip Clinch, VP Aircraft Services, SITA, said: “More and more airlines are recognizing the benefits that EFBs bring to their operations and now SITA is offering airlines a managed solution that leverages the combined experience of our EFB partners, SITA’s EFB technical consulting and systems integration team, communication services and extensive device management. By choosing our service they can eliminate the headache of dealing with multiple cellular, WiFi and satellite partners and enjoy a single managed infrastructure.”
Joe McGoldrick, CEO, Flightman, said: “We are excited to be delivering an EFB solution to GOL which will allow for the optimization of their operational processes around the aircraft. With more and more content being published in electronic form, the business benefits of deploying a solution on the aircraft which is connected with the airlines back-office systems have been clearly demonstrated.”
As part of the delivery of the SITA e-Aircraft Application Services, the SITA team will work with GOL to ensure the airline achieves the maximum operational, economic and safety benefits obtainable from an EFB program. This includes a managed process with workshops to analyze business cases, support to obtain regulatory approvals for use and support of the change management program within the airline.
Implementation has already begun at GOL and when full regulatory approvals are achieved the solution will be used as GOL equips the 130 aircraft with its selected EFB hardware. SITA is also in discussions and conducting workshops with many other airlines as this managed infrastructure can cater to airlines with as few as 25 aircraft to those with over 600.
AeroMechanical Services’ AFIRS to Take Flight with NetJets Europes
Europe’s largest business jet operator to install AFIRS with full services on 30 aircraft
Calgary, Alberta, and Lisbon, Portugal- March 27, 2012 – AeroMechanical Services Ltd. (TSX-V: AMA) (the “Company” or “AMA”) has signed a contract with the largest business jet operator in Europe, NetJets Europe. AMA will provide the Automated Flight Information Reporting System (“AFIRSTM”) and services for 30 Hawker Beechcraft 750/800XP aircraft.
The Company and NetJets Europe have engaged in a collaborative in-service evaluation of the AFIRS 220, its Fuel Initiative Reporting System Tracker (“FIRSTTM”), and FLYHTStreamTM programs over the past two-and–a-half-years. During that time, a Supplemental Type Certificate (“STC”) was obtained from the European Aviation Safety Agency (“EASA”) for the AFIRS 220, applicable to the Hawker Beechcraft 987 series of business jets. The initial installations will consist of the Company’s next generation AFIRS 228B, which will be updated to the AFIRS 228U to provide compliance with Europe’s new air traffic control regulations (“Link 2000+”) for Protected Mode Controller Pilot Data Link Communication (“PM CPDLC”). The AFIRS 228U upgrade will be implemented when certification activities are completed, well before the February 2015 compliance deadline.
“NetJets Europe is the European leader in business aviation and we are proud to have met their standards and expectations through our collaborative in-service evaluation,” said Bill Tempany, President and CEO of AMA. “AMA recognizes NetJets’ commitment to safety, quality, and customer service. We look forward to serving NetJets Europe and its customers, enabling greater fleet productivity and safety.”
NetJets Europe, financially backed by Berkshire Hathaway, operates 150 aircraft. It has selected the entire suite of AFIRS services to provide real-time data from its Hawker Beechcraft 750/800XP aircraft fleet as well as enhanced flight data monitoring (“FDM”), fuel management, and Electronic Flight Bag (“EFB”) connectivity. AMA’s FIRST program will quantify and monitor operating procedures to reduce fuel consumption and emissions, aiding NetJets Europe’s Climate Initiative, which aims to reduce NetJets Europe’s environmental impact. NetJets Europe and AMA will also work together to adapt AFIRS’ unique FLYHTStream position and data streaming capability to serve the operator’s need for enhanced troubleshooting and emergency management.
AMA will provide equipment and services to NetJets Europe over a five-year contract. The installations for Hawker Beechcraft 750/800XP will commence in April 2012 and activation will occur when AMA receives all necessary certifications. No issues are anticipated in completion of the certifications. AMA will receive initial payments totaling between $1.0M – $2.0M USD over the first few months of the contract and payments for recurring revenue services as incurred. If AMA completes installation on all contracted aircraft and receives appropriate EASA STCs, with recurring service for the full term of the agreement, gross revenue to AMA will total in excess of $6.0M USD, excluding optional upgrades and services. The exact amounts of the contract have not been disclosed at the customer’s request.
The Company has previously received a provisions-only STC for AFIRS 228 on the Hawker Beechcraft 750/800XP from EASA and a flight test was successfully conducted on January 26, 2012, in order to obtain the full activation STC. It is anticipated the Company will receive the activation approval and STC from EASA within eight weeks of the flight test.
AMA first announced an AFIRS 220 installation on a NetJets Europe’s aircraft on September 9, 2009. It was the Company’s first business jet installation.

Commsoft’s OASES goes live on Hi Fly widebody fleet
One of the most complex implementations of maintenance management specialist Commsoft’s OASES software has just gone live on the nine widebody aircraft of Portugese ACMI operator Hi Fly.
The challenging implementation covered a fleet of three basic Airbus types (A310, A330, A340), including five major sub-types (A310-300, A330-200, A330-300, A340-300, A340-500) powered by five major engine types from four different engine manufacturers.
Its difficulty was increased by a constantly changing fleet composition during the project, which will continue with another three aircraft to be added in 2012, and the diverse and continually evolving operational environment that is characteristic of ACMI operations.
The introduction of OASES to Hi Fly has required a particularly close working relationship over the past year with Hi Fly’s engineering team in Lisbon.
Hi Fly is initially taking advantage of the following OASES functionalities:
- Reliability
- Tech log and Defect control
- Work card production and planning
- Digital documentation Level 1
- Technical records and forecasting / job scheduler
- Airworthiness directive and service bulletin evaluation
- Aircraft Maintenance Programme (AMP) revision management
Commsoft Managing Director, Nick Godwin said:
“The OASES implementation at Hi Fly has been very complex, requiring very close planning between Commsoft, Hi Fly’s management and our specialist implementation contractors. Data was required to be migrated from several sources in a dynamic environment. I am delighted that OASES will help enhance engineering operations for this highly-successful widebody ACMI airliner operation with its diverse customer base and we look forward to supporting Hi Fly’s growing operations for many years to come.”
HI Fly Chief Finance Officer, Mr Sérgio Bagorro said:
“Being able to place our aircraft in different operating and regulatory environments, often at very short notice, while knowing that their maintenance is beyond question, and being able to demonstrate that to others, is fundamental to our business. OASES is a crucial tool in achieving that goal.”
