Texel Air opt for Rusada’s ENVISION

MANAMA, BAHRAIN: Texel Air, a Bahraini cargo operator and MRO, has selected Rusada’s ENVISION software solution to manage its airworthiness and maintenance operations.

Texel Air use a fleet of Boeing 737 freighters to provide cargo charter and ACMI services across the globe. They also offer base and line maintenance services from their 3,200 square metre hangar located at Bahrain International Airport.

Texel Air utilised a third-party specialist to help manage their fleet, but after recent growth and with planned expansion on the horizon, they are seeking greater control over their operational data and processes.

“With its depth in functionality and easily accessible interfaces, we see ENVISION as the backbone of our future digital journey” said Andres Kjerulf, Director of Airworthiness at Texel Air. “We are very pleased to be partnering with Rusada, and are looking forward to working closely alongside them towards a successful implementation project”

Texel Air will be adopting 8 of ENVISION’s modules including Fleet Management, Base & Line MRO, and Inventory Management, plus 3 of their mobile apps for cross-device access, and paperless operations. The web-based solution will be deployed by Rusada’s in-house team of implementation specialists.

“A key factor behind ENVISION’s selection was our ability take their existing operational data and easily migrate it into our solution. The challenges presented by implementation, particularly migration of data, can often be a barrier to upgrading software solutions, but with the experience our teams possess, we are finding more and more ways to streamline this process.”

“We look forward to a swift deployment, and to playing a key part in Texel Air’s continued growth.”

Operation Control System from Lufthansa Systems supports flight operations with AI for the first time in the aviation industry // IT solution for airline ground operations presented with optimized features

  • NetLine/Ops ++ aiOCC as a pioneer in aviation IT: For the first time, a decision assistant supports with reinforcement learning
  • NetLine/HubControl Optimisation: controlling the entire hub thanks to real-time data
  • NetLine/HubControl Turnaround Manager (TAM) streamlines ground operations during turnaround through improved on-time tools
  • NetLine/HubControl Passenger Connection Manager (PCM) secures critical transfer connections

Raunheim, 15th December 2022. Lufthansa Systems recently welcomed more than 455 participants to its traditional Airline Forum. Under the motto “We are mastering the challenge together!” the specialist for aviation IT presented the latest developments in the aviation industry. The main focus was on innovations in the NetLine product range, which featured significant IT innovations.

Innovation through artificial intelligence: The new NetLine/Ops ++ aiOCC

Flight operations controllers make complex decisions every day. They react to unforeseen events to minimize the impact of schedule disruptions. To find the best solution, several information sources must be analyzed within minutes. The recently introduced NetLine/Ops ++ aiOCC module uses the possibilities of artificial intelligence. It translates information from various sources into concrete, actionable recommendations.

It monitors all events around the aircraft, rotation, passengers and crew and detects delay risks at an early stage. NetLine/Ops ++ aiOCC makes timely suggestions to proactively adjust the flight plan and thus increases the efficiency of flight operations in an innovative way. NetLine/Ops ++ aiOCC automatically generates suggestions to improve the overall operation and provides the Operations Controller with additional information on the impact of the proposed solution. Based on NetLine/Ops ++ data and using the methods developed in aiOCC, the Operations Controller is able to fully recapitulate planning, operations and performance at the end of the day.

Pioneers thanks to innovative IT: Reinforcement Learning

NetLine/Ops ++ aiOCC is based on reinforcement learning, a machine learning method for extracting cause and effect from data and providing data-driven decision support. The decision assistant is trained on a large amount of historical data. Lufthansa Systems is thus the first IT provider in the aviation industry to use reinforcement learning to derive meaningful recommendations.

Latest technology on the ground: NetLine/HubControl Passenger Connection Manager (PCM) and Turnaround Manager (TAM)

NetLine/HubControl enables airlines to have continuously predictable and controlled operations by incorporating situational awareness of ground operations, real-time decision support and sophisticated integration with business processes. The NetLine/HubControl Passenger Connection Manager (PCM) focuses on providing the hub controller with a transparent and detailed view of inbound and outbound flight connections at each hub with a focus on categorising connections according to feasibility and optimal use of resources.

Don’t miss the connection: Support (not only) in case of flight irregularities

Based on passenger information such as status, booking class, fare, as well as “ease and cost of recovery”, NetLine/HubControl allows you to prioritise flight connections and take action to recover otherwise missed connections. When connections cannot be recovered, NetLine/HubControl helps to make a decision to prioritise passengers based on relevance and select the best solutions for each passenger (stopover, rebooking on other airlines flights, etc.) through a cost evaluation algorithm (airfare, hotel, meals, vouchers, etc.). NetLine/HubControl helps to find the most cost-effective solution even in stressful situations.

Optimisation of ground operations during the turnaround through improved on-time tools

NetLine/HubControl Turnaround Manager (TAM) provides necessary tools to manage ground operations between each flight. TAM bridges the gap between airport resources and airline turnaround operations, providing enhanced on-time performance recovery tools with realistic ground times and delay management. To ensure accurate ground times, TAM enables the customisation of a turnaround task list for operations, communication between OCC and ramp agents is facilitated through an embedded chat platform via TAM. By integrating automated data sources or manual inputs, TAM captures the status of ground operations and identifies critical paths for individual turnarounds. This enables the Operations Controller to allocate resources to the required location to reduce the duration of each operation.

In doing so, NetLine/HubControl uses the concept of a fully flexible and configurable application so that all categorisations, cost calculations, PAX relevance, available metrics and other variables and calculations are fully configurable. In addition, the NetLine/HubControl user interface can be configured to display all types of data entries in the flight database, providing a complete overview of the entire hub.

AMOS including the AMOSmobile suite meeting VAECO’s expectations

The festive signing ceremony took place in Hanoi on 6th December 2022 and marked a successful conclusion to a long and complex pre-sales journey for all involved. Vietnam Airlines Engineering Company (VAECO), a subsidiary of Vietnam Airlines, has signed agreements with Swiss Aviation Software Ltd. (Swiss-AS) and NGS Equipment and Communication Joint Stock (NGS), the Swiss-AS local partner in Vietnam, who will support Swiss-AS in the process of implementing the MRO software solution AMOS.

Five years ago, Swiss-AS released the AMOS MRO edition, specifically designed to fulfil the needs of MRO providers. This AMOS edition, successfully implemented several times since its release, as well as the Swiss-AS AMOSmobile packages for stores management (AMOSmobile/STORES) and line/base maintenance (AMOSmobile/EXEC), fully met the functional requirements that VAECO and Vietnam Airlines were looking for in their tender process. AMOS includes the tools required to fully manage the maintenance program with more efficient data synchronisation, allowing the business to pursue the goal of reducing costs and maintenance time, without any concessions being made in terms of safety and quality, as well as improving the operational readiness factor of the fleet. Furthermore, AMOS provides state-of-the-art modules for planning and controlling all maintenance processes, including optimised assignment of staff resources when defining the production plan – with the objective of increasing labour productivity and efficiency. The full integration of real-time data in AMOS over the different data streams in AMOS – from material management, to engineering, to planning and production – enable informed and effective business decisions to be made and therefore minimise flight disruptions, delays, and cancellations.

Increase of Efficiency / Productivity expected

Once the AMOS implementation has been completed, VAECO foresees that labour productivity will increase by 15-20%, that maintenance turnaround times of aircraft will shorten, and that the higher manpower productivity will allow VAECO to extend its third-party maintenance market share, which is currently in great demand as a result of the airline industry having returned to profitability after the Covid-19 pandemic.

AMOS will fast-track the digital transformation process of VAECO/Vietnam Airlines

“The new software will make an important contribution to helping VAECO become a leading aircraft maintenance service provider in the region, while promoting digital transformation and information technology application in Vietnam Airlines’ production and business activities. Thereby, ensuring a solid technical foundation for Vietnam Airlines’ 4-star, now approaching 5-star, in standard flight services.”

Mr. Nguyen Chien Thang, Deputy General Director of Vietnam Airlines:

“With the onboarding of VAECO, another Vietnamese customer joins the AMOS customer community and reinforces the Swiss-AS predominant market position in Vietnam. Our strong position in Vietnam as well as Swiss-AS continued investment into the AMOS MRO Edition, have once more paid off. AMOS will surely accelerate the digital transformation process of VAECO as well as Vietnam Airlines supporting their growing efficiency and productivity. With Swiss-AS now using latest technology (Flutter/Dart from Google) in the further development of AMOS apps, we assure that the large AMOS community – now including VAECO and Vietnam Airlines – will also in future benefit from intelligent, best-in-class, highly secure and enjoyable-to-use software.”

Fabiano Faccoli, the CEO of Swiss-AS:

“NGS is proud to be part of this important project with VAECO and Swiss-AS and will strive to continue our track record of successfully bringing world-best solutions and technologies to Vietnamese enterprises to fast track our country’s digital transformation process, enabling Vietnam to become a prominent player in the region and globally.”

Tomorrow.io Selected to Provide Weather Forecasting Technology Throughout all of JetBlue’s Flight Operations

Having started in one airport five years ago, Tomorrow.io is now being implemented as JetBlue’s end-to-end solution for global ground and flight operations.

Tomorrow.io, the world’s leading weather and climate security program, announced today that JetBlue has selected the company to be its end-to-end weather forecasting technology across all global operations, including providing its on-site EWINS program. The contract was awarded after a request for purchase process in which JetBlue extensively evaluated weather and climate solutions in order to identify the best global partner.

The selection serves as a strategic culmination to a journey that began five years ago when Tomorrow.io and JetBlue first began working together on ground operations at Logan Airport in Boston. After seeing the impact Tomorrow.io was able to have on efficiency, the airline’s venture capital subsidiary JetBlue Ventures participated in the company’s Series A funding round. During the past four years, Tomorrow.io worked alongside both JetBlue Ventures and JetBlue to grow from a single airport to company-wide adoption.

“We’re delighted to see the progress Tomorrow.io has made along with JetBlue in the past few years,” said Amy Burr, President at JetBlue Ventures. “At our time of investment in Tomorrow.io, it was clear that the innovative vision they had was going to be the next-generation of forecasting in the aviation industry, and this relationship is a testament to JetBlue Ventures’ original mission to bring innovative technologies to our parent company.”

With no shortage of challenges facing the aviation industry, including unpredictable weather and heightened sustainability goals, the implementation of Tomorrow.io comes at the perfect time for JetBlue. The number of weather events impacting airline operations are increasing every year, demanding operations teams to be more climate resilient or else risk major delays and cost. By utilizing Tomorrow.io’s industry leading weather intelligence platform, JetBlue has now armed their operations with the technology needed to predict and mitigate weather disruptions.

“The sheer number of weather events and the impact of those events affecting airlines each year has vastly grown over the years,” said Itai Zlotnik, Co-Founder and CCO at Tomorrow.io. “Having worked with JetBlue Ventures and JetBlue during the past few years, we are extremely proud of the value Tomorrow.io has been able to deliver to meaningfully improve their operational efficiency, and we are excited about what the future holds.”

JetBlue operates more than 1,000 flights per day across 100 global destinations, and mitigating disruptions from weather has been the centerpiece for Tomorrow.io and JetBlue’s partnership from inception. The teams have worked together on tactical solutions such as predictive de-icing programs, estimated to be saving JetBlue $50,000 per month per hub, as well as longer-term projects around how to improve operations against an increasing number of annual weather events.

“JetBlue strives first and foremost to be the innovation leader when it comes to safety and efficiency,” said Steve Olson, Vice President of JetBlue’s System Operations Center. “With Tomorrow.io, we have found the right partner for us for both day-to-day operations, as well as sustainability goals related to climate resiliency and our overall ESG strategy.

From a technology standpoint, the next significant milestone for Tomorrow.io is the launch of the first-of-its-kind, commercial weather satellite constellation equipped with radars and microwave sounders. Tomorrow.io’s space program will democratize access to global weather forecasting and enable organizations across all industries to prepare for and mitigate the business impact of weather.

SITA eWAS Dispatch helps Azul enhance its weather resiliency

Brazilian carrier, Azul Linhas Aéreas Brasileiras (Azul), has implemented SITA eWAS Dispatch, a new-generation flight tracking and weather data solution, giving dispatchers a real-time view of the location of every aircraft and live and upcoming weather hazards. This visibility will bring improved operational efficiency, climate resiliency, and safety, including carbon emissions and fuel consumption savings.

Climate science studies warn of increasing hazardous weather events linked to the changing climate. The World Metrological Organization (WMO) highlights that Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) is a region significantly impacted by extreme weather and climate change. Early warning systems and climate services can help reduce climate impacts, but these are lacking in the LAC region, according to the WMO.

As a carrier operating domestic and international flights across the LAC region, Azul has selected SITA’s cloud-based tracking and weather awareness solution to strengthen its weather resiliency and safety. Instead of the usual approach of a single weather source, eWAS Dispatch has global weather coverage from multiple providers, allowing dispatchers to make better decisions based on more accurate and extensive data. The solution also features an early warning system that provides alerts on potential weather issues. It is also Global Aeronautical Distress and Safety System (GADSS) compliant – the industry standard for global flight tracking to support inflight safety.

Severe weather events often prove expensive for airlines when factoring in the cost of network and operational impacts, passenger reallocation, and so on. SITA estimate that its eWAS Dispatch solution could save around $600,000 in avoiding just one weather incident. The flight replanning feature can save airlines like Azul approximately 153 tons of fuel and 488 tons of CO2 per year based on conservative estimates. The carbon reduction benefits support Azul’s sustainability ambitions to be net-zero by 2045, five years ahead of the industry’s long-term net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 goal.

Diogo Youssef, Engineering and Flight Dispatch Manager, Azul, said: “We are operating in a region impacted by extreme weather. We selected SITA eWAS Dispatch because it provides superior aviation weather data and next-generation flight tracking to help build our resiliency to weather events, while improving operational efficiencies and reducing emissions.”

Yann Cabaret, Chief Executive Officer, SITA FOR AIRCRAFT, said: “We’re providing and developing best-in-class solutions that help address the challenges facing our industry today and tomorrow. Real-time data flow is key to helping airlines like Azul adapt to changing environments and support better decision-making for more resilient and sustainable flight operations.”
